Description
Only on three occasions has Her Majesty been depicted jugate (side by side) with her husband, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. The first such occasion was in 1997 to celebrate their Golden Wedding (50th) Anniversary. Jugate portraits are seldom used on British coinage – prior to this issue of 1997 the most recent occasion had been on the coinage of William and Mary minted in 1689-1694. Designer: Philip Nathan.
The reverse features a pair of shields arranged in a chevron, on the left the personal shield of arms of Her Majesty and on the right the shield of arms of Prince Philip. Above and centrally is St Edward’s Crown dividing the dates 1947 and 1997 with 20 NOVEMBER below, and at the base of the coin a cabled anchor and the denomination. The reverse is the work of designer Leslie Durbin.
