Description
By the time King George V came to the throne in 1910, the silver five shilling piece, or crown, had fallen out of favour as a coin in circulation. The first silver crown of his reign was not minted until almost two decades later, in 1927, and even then it was not produced for circulation, being minted in Proof quality only, and included in sets released to celebrate new designs on the silver coinage.
The mintage of just 15,030 coins makes it the rarest crown ‘first’ of any monarch since the reign of William IV.
