A three-day UK bank holiday weekend has been granted from Saturday 6th May to Monday 8th May 2023 to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III.
Here is all you need to know about the key events spread across the celebratory weekend…
Saturday
On Saturday 6th May, the Coronation will take place at Westminster Abbey. Both Charles III and Camilla will travel to the Abbey in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach in ‘The King’s Procession’. Conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the service will reflect the monarch’s role today and look forward to the future.
Afterwards, their majesties along with other members of the royal family will travel back to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach in ‘The Coronation Procession’ which will take the same route in reverse. Finally, the King and Queen, along with their family members, will greet the public on the palace balcony.
Sunday
On Sunday 7th May, the Coronation Concert will take place at Windsor Castle, which will be produced and broadcast by the BBC. The concert will host a wide variety of performances from global music artists and the Coronation Choir. ‘Lighting up the Nation’ will also take place which consists of iconic landmarks being lit up across the United Kingdom.
Organised by the Big Lunch team at the Eden Project, the ‘Coronation Big Lunch’ will also take place on Sunday. This has been organised to help boost community spirit by bringing together millions of people across streets and parks around the United Kingdom. Camilla has been patron of the Big Lunch since 2013.
Monday
On Monday 8th May, ‘The Big Help Out’ will commence, which encourages communities to come together and try volunteering for themselves. The Together Coalition, the Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service and other groups across the United Kingdom have partnered together to organise this event in tribute to the King’s public service.
